Hands-On Workshop Descriptions:
From Nervous to Expert: Mastering the Pediatric Vulvar Exam with Simulation (SIM) Training
Amanda French, MD; Tania Dumont, MD; Brytanie Marshall, MD
The pediatric vulvovaginal exam can be challenging for both novice and seasoned providers from multiple specialties due to the rarity of cases and sensitivity of the exam. SIM training utilizing 3D printed vulvar and vaginal models coupled with online case modules offers a safe and controlled training environment. This workshop offers a framework for pediatric and adolescent gynecology educators to build and implement a SIM course for all levels. The program can be modified to demonstrate basic examination of normal anatomy to differing anatomic pathology. Workshop participants will appreciate the approach to SIM development, participate in case-based learning scenarios, and demonstrate use of the 3D PediVulva model for external and vaginoscopy education.
Simulated Surgical Management of Vaginal Stenosis: Tissue Graft (Simulated Buccal Graft Patch) and Tissue Reconfiguration Techniques (z-plasty)
Jennifer Dietrich, MD
This is a hands on surgical workshop based on surgical simulation models to mimic vaginal stenosis. Approximately 30-70% of women undergoing reconstructive surgery of the vagina will have a stenosis complication. It is important for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology surgeons to understand principles for managing stenosis as there are many underlying causes in addition to previous vaginal surgery. This will focus on the management of complex vaginal stenosis. There will be 2 models, one of which will focus on partial vaginal stenosis, requiring a graft and another model focusing on complete vaginal stenosis, utilizing a z-plasty technique. This z-plasty technique also applies to management of a thick transverse vaginal septum, a vaginal anomaly affecting 1/84,000 reproductive age women. As the surgeon makes decisions about techniques for application to manage vaginal stenosis, the type of vaginal stenosis should be characterized. This will be reviewed briefly, including location of the stenosis, thickness of the stenosis and caliber of the vaginal aperture. Target Audience: Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology surgeons, OBGYNs or specialists with expertise in the surgical management of vaginal stenosis
Comprehensive Support of Patients Choosing to Pursue Vaginal Dilation: The Ins and Outs of a Multidisciplinary Approach
Christine Pennesi, MD; Jamie Gunn, RN; Maria Garner, PT, DPT; Michelle Ernst, PhD
The process of vaginal lengthening through dilation can be a daunting task. Learn tips, tricks, pelvic floor exercise techniques, and other support tools to help your patients succeed with vaginal dilation. This session will be taught by leaders from the interdisciplinary MRKH Care Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Target audience: Attendings, fellows, Nurse practitioner/advanced care providers, Nurses, Patient care advocates, Physical therapists, Psychologists, Social workers and anyone involved in healthcare of patients utilizing vaginal dilation.
Histrelin insertion and removal for pubertal suppression
Megan Jacobs, MD; Kate Debiec, MD
The workshop will review histrelin indications, safety and efficacy, counseling, prior authorization and workflow for obtaining and storing the implant. Participants will have hands-on instruction in the procedural steps to insert, remove, and reinsert histrelin acetate implants. Pearls and pitfalls for the procedure in the office and operating room setting will be reviewed. This session is appropriate for surgical and non-surgical clinicians.
Innovations in Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy
Stephanie Cizec, MD; Lissa Yu, MD
This workshop introduces new and innovative technology useful for performing and teaching PAG surgery. This session provides an introduction to laparoscopic and hysteroscopic simulation, advanced electrosurgical instruments, office procedural tools, and review of applications in pediatric gynecologic surgeries. The entire session will provide hands-on practice using equipment sponsored by Hologic. Target audience: Gynecologic surgeons (attendings and trainees welcome)
